Thinking Like an Inspector
What anonymous evaluators notice first — and how to train for objectivity under pressure.
Inspectors are trained professionals who stay as paying guests. They are not trying to "catch" you with tricks; they apply the same standards every time.
What they notice in the first hour
• Phone efficiency and greeting quality before arrival (if they booked by phone)
• Curbside presence, eye contact, luggage ownership
• Lobby condition, scent, music volume, staff acknowledgment
• Registration time, request confirmation, key function, escort offer
• Room first impression: air, cleanliness, temperature, amenity precision
What they test later
• Request timing (often a simple item within 10 minutes)
• Problem resolution ownership (they may create a controlled service challenge)
• Dietary care at meals
• Name use and preference continuity across outlets
• Public restroom and corridor condition at odd hours
• Departure accuracy and farewell quality
Training implication
Roleplay the full stay, not isolated tasks. Five-Star is consistency under fatigue — evening shift quality must match morning polish.
